  • natural fibre clothing, accessories, and/or home textiles (must be 100% natural fibres, such as wool, silk, cotton, linen, bamboo, hemp, etc.; no nylon, polyester, etc. content)

  • must be white/off-white/light coloured (the scouring process will usually effectively remove light-coloured synthetic dyes only)

  • maximum quantity per participant is 1 kg/2 lbs - this is generally equivalent to about 3-6 items, depending on size, and might translate to 3-4 blouses/shirts, or 2-3 skirts/pairs of pants, or 5-6 items of children’s clothing

NOTE:

~ Workshop Overview ~

  • this is not a workshop on natural dye or surface design techniques (for that, please register for one of Mamie’s Schoolhouse’s other workshops)

  • this is a one day opportunity to refresh/revamp your clothing or household linens by taking advantage of the large scale natural dye vats available at the studio

  • be prepared for threads to not necessarily dye the same colour as the rest of your item(s), as sewing threads often contain synthetic fibres

Morning - Early Afternoon:

  • learn to properly scour your items to remove old dyes, dirt, oils, etc. to create thoroughly cleaned fibres for mordanting

  • learn to properly prepare your fibres using natural, non-toxic mordants (a mordant creates a molecular bridge between natural fibres and natural dyes)

Mid-Late Afternoon:

  • dye your items in Mamie’s Schoolhouse’s very large dye vats - including organic indigo (blue), madder (red/pink/orange), and seasonally available yellow dye plants - all light-fast and wash-fast

  • participants are welcome to use tools in the studio, or to bring their own, for self-directed creation of dye resist areas/surface designs prior to dyeing

  • time-permitting, and if vats haven’t been exhausted, you are also welcome to play with over-dyeing one colour with another to create additional hues
